"Always a mother first"
March 8 is International Women's Day. On this day, we celebrate the women of Singapore. The focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women, to a celebration of women's economic, political, and social achievements.
We speak to some of our women leaders in the Party and have compiled their responses in the following tribute. Here are Minister Grace Fu's views:
"Giving birth to my sons - only women can experience the joy of giving birth to a baby that has been growing in your body. From that moment, I know that I will always be a mother first."
- Minister Grace Fu recalls one of her happiest moments that she celebrated her status as a woman.
"Women given rights and protection under the Women's Charter - rights to alimony and inheritance, protection against abuse and family violence are some examples. The appointment of Mrs. Lim Hwee Hua as a Minister was another important milestone and many other women pioneers in their respective areas. I look forward to more women holding leadership positions in all sectors- from academia, people, corporate to political."
- Minister Grace Fu on what she thinks are some of the greatest milestones of Singaporean women.
Her message to all Singaporean women:
"Over the last five decades, we, women in Singapore, have made great strides in all areas - education, employment, social, politics, art, health, sports and more. We have many more opportunities to achieve our aspirations in having a meaningful career, raising a good family in a safe and secure environment. Our contribution to the society is remarkable as our sisters received recognition in many fields, locally and globally. On this IWD, let's celebrate our achievement even as strive for greater gender equality.
